When news broke that Beyoncé and Andre 3000 would be covering Amy Winehouse‘s timeless “Back to Black,” like many, I was instantly intrigued. While some shuttered at the thought, I was interested to see how Bey and Andre would interpret the classic track. After much anticipation, the song has been unveiled and it is certainly a unique take on the original. And not exactly in a good way.
There is a type of cool money or fame can’t buy. When I think of Andre 3000, I see him as the cool guy’s favorite “cool” guy. In addition to being insanely talented as an all-inclusive artist, he raps, sings, acts and has become somewhat of a muse to his fellow artist (how many “Prototype” covers has there been). While he surely excels creatively, he also does so stylistically. Music icon. Check. Fashion icon. Check. He defines what it means to be well… definitive. You’d have to be in technological solitude to not know that Andre 3000 is portraying Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming biopic All Is By My Side. Though many of the details surrounding the film are sketchy (no release date has been announced), the images of Mr. Benjamin as the legend on location in Ireland are enough to silence any wonders regarding the completion of this project. As we’re visual-obsessed here at SOM, we cant help but revel in this iconic goodness.
