NEW MUSIC | Meshell Ndegeocello & Cody Chesnutt – “To Be Young,Gifted and Black”

When beauty is created, the only reaction to have is sheer appreciation.  After hearing “To Be Young, Gifted and Black”  by Meshell Ndegeocello and Cody Chesnutt, I was completely awed by the level of tenderness and care they had with the Nina Simone classic. From the stripped back musical arrangement handled by Ndegeocello to the refined vocals – both made the  powerful message of the song came to life.  When handling a standard  done by the incomparable Nina Simone, later to be covered by Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin, it becomes something much bigger than a cover, rather an affirmation of hope, pride, and progress. Meshell Ndegeocello’s tenth album, Pour une âme Souveraine (For a Sovereign Soul), A Dedication to Nina Simone will be released October 9.

NEW VIDEO | Dawn Richard – Wild N’Faith

As one who appreciates strong concepts and  imagery, Dawn Richard has certainly gained a fan in me. Not only is her music impressive, but the all around direction and focus of her sound is consistent and distinct. Her latest visual “Wild N’ Faith” is by far her most extravagant affair to date. Staying true to her warrior themed motif, the video is stunning on all fronts. Dawn Richard unquestionably gets that the purpose of a visual is to garner the eye and show character, thus is reaping the rewards. Her debut album GoldenHeart is out October 16.

EVENTS | R&B Divas Live

When I think of R&B Divas I recall a period of time where dynamic vocals and talent were not as questionable they appear now nowadays. Women were blessed with voices and they could not only sing, they sang. Thanks to the advent of Reality TV many of the great artists of the 90′s are now able to reconnect with long time fans while also introducing their selves to a newer generation.

TV One’s new show R&B Divas was celebrated in full force this past week with the R&B Divas Live event hosted by IM3 Media. Featuring local talent such as  Tiffany Flemming, Susan Christine and Jessic Q. Ross , the vibe was ultra nostalgic and celebratory. The Philly Divas  covered classic songs  by shows stars  Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Syleena Johnson, KeKe Wyatt and Monifah Carter . All in all, it was good to be back in the 90′s, even if it was just for a night.

SOM INTERVIEW | Bianca Raquel

I’ve spoken of Bianca Raquel and likened her artistic rise to that of a flower in bloom. Having already met her numerous times, I’ve witnessed the magic of her live performance. Needless to say, I was long convinced of her talent. Natural, graceful, and layered, Bianca Raquel’s artistry is undeniable. A woman fully at the helm of her sound and her voice, she is as refreshing as she is gifted. Sound On Mars recently had the pleasure of speaking with Bianca Raquel before she hit the stage for an intimate set in Philly. Speaking on her musical pedigree, creative freedom, and of course her forthcoming project The Detox, Bianca Raquel was candid and inspiring.

NEW VIDEO | Beyonce – “I Was Here”

There is arguably no other contemporary artist  more successful than Beyoncé. She has remained distinctive and consistent in her ascent to pop dominion. After the countless accolades and relentless work over the years, The Bey girl has by all accounts become irreplaceable (yes, I said it). So after becoming Queen Bey, what else is there to do? How about raise awareness and shed light on humanity. That’s exactly what she did when she sang “I Was Here” at the UN General Assembly in front of a live audience. The beautifully captured video  shows why we all matter. Beyond the flawless vocals and glamor there’s a message. Seems as it she has come full circle, if only we could all be so fortunate.

LIVE | Miguel Previews “Kaleidoscope Dream”

Since reinventing himself with the release of his Art Dealer EP series, there has yet to be a dull moment in the countdown to the release of Miguel‘s upcoming album, Kaleidoscope Dream. Taking the stage at Joe’s Pub in New York City, Miguel unveiled new material from the new LP and songs from his Art Dealer collection and successful debut album.

As Soul expressed earlier this week, Miguel becomes better and better with time; with his latest projects, he is not only making more of a name for himself, but a bold statement for his ambitious brand of progressive R&B as well.

NEW VIDEO | Angel Haze – “New York”

It’s been a while since we posted on the venom-spitting Angel Haze but she is back with the official video for “New York,” a single from her newly-released mixtape, Reservation. While the dark visual is certainly an interesting watch, I can’t get past how the 19-year-old RIPS the track apart.

As evidenced by the song and it’s accompanying video, as well as the major buzz that she is attracting,  there is no denying that Angel Haze will be making a massive splash this year.

NEW MUSIC | Nina Sky – “Nicole & Natalie” [LP]

The music industry is full of triumphant returns. After 8 long years, Nina Sky is back with a new album, aptly titled Nicole & Natalie. After such a long absence, a proper reintroduction to the twins is essential. With a completely fresh sound and look, the album incorporates a mix of dance, R&B and pop-ready tracks. After indulging in the music myself, I can say “Never Kissed You” and “Comatose” are personal favorites. As the duos previous work was more surface bearing, their new sound dives a bit deeper—artistic growth indeed. After all, who doesn’t love a comeback? Download the album for free below.

LIVE | The xx – “Swept Away”

The xx’s forthcoming sophomore album, Coexist, is surely one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The lead single, “Angels” is as luminous as any fan would expect. As the album is not out until September 10, there is still time for the world to wonder what the LP will sound like. As the band is currently on a mini US tour, that question can now be answered. They preformed a new track “Swept Away” during their stop in Los Angeles. The fan footage captures the sound that is synonymous with The xx—harmonious sullenness,  however here with a more uptemp0 feel; no complaints here.
