When beauty is created, the only reaction to have is sheer appreciation. After hearing “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” by Meshell Ndegeocello and Cody Chesnutt, I was completely awed by the level of tenderness and care they had with the Nina Simone classic. From the stripped back musical arrangement handled by Ndegeocello to the refined vocals – both made the powerful message of the song came to life. When handling a standard done by the incomparable Nina Simone, later to be covered by Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin, it becomes something much bigger than a cover, rather an affirmation of hope, pride, and progress. Meshell Ndegeocello’s tenth album, Pour une âme Souveraine (For a Sovereign Soul), A Dedication to Nina Simone will be released October 9.
