Lauryn Hill Returns…

As anyone with an ear for greatness would rejoice…L-Boogie is back on the stage doing what she does best. She is set for an intimate Tour via the US which began just two nights ago.

She just doesn’t perform, she just doesn’t sing, she just doesn’t entertain. She leaves her blood on the stage. With her, it’s not about a perfect note, range, and all that mess, it’s about rawness. Needless to say A.Jamar and myself are trying our best to make it to the Atlantic City Show. That is if it doesn’t sell out with the quickness one would expect. Music is music, no matter how old or new.

THE BEST OF 2010| Kanye West- “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Out of all of 2010′s show-stopping moments in music, none were as illustrious as Kanye West‘s fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Aside from crafting a complete masterpiece, West astoundingly transitioned from crucifixion to redemption. Just when West was heading for the demise of his career, he delivered the album that re-solidified his place as the most gifted artist alive, making his way back into the hearts of music lovers across the globe.

More Reasons to Anticipate 2011…

As we inch closer and closer to the new year, I can barely contain myself because of the major albums that are coming our way. Of the much-anticipated bunch is the comeback album from NO DOUBT–one of the greatest bands of all time.  The album will be the first to be released in nearly a decade by the group…and it is certainly long overdue. I cannot emphasize enough of how HUGE 2011 is shaping up to be!

I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Don’t Speak”…

FELA KUTI| The Beat That Changed The World

As Soul previously posted, we recently became acquainted with the epic work of Fela Kuti through the sensational Broadway production, FELA! While the play provided numerous striking moments, it was the music that had the most significant impact.

During his rise to prominence in the 1970s, Fela established himself as a provocative activist and political figure through his innovative contributions to music. Birthing his own style of music–appropriately titled Afrobeat–Fela was able to break massive grounds through the music that he wrote, composed and performed. Fela not only created music with appealing sounds, rhythms and instrumentation; he also fused his genius works with bold political commentary that informed his people and motivated their liberation from the government. Although the content of most of his music resonated most with the people of Nigeria, his musical influence spread to all parts of the world, proving that music is the true universal language that connects us all, despite our differences.

Through his global fame and notoriety, we are able to celebrate his legacy and influence even nearly 40 years after the initial introduction of his work. As one of the most highly-revered icons in world history, we honor the ferocious brilliance of Fela Kuti.

I N T R I G U E

Terry Richardson has an uncanny ability to capture the true essence of his subjects personality. No matter the person, the image is always so authentic while intriguing at the same time. His work is provocative, compelling, and consistently original.

SKIN| Bareback Muisic

Raw, un-cut, and bareback would best describe Skin’s sound. A voice that emotes  anguish, sadness, and the trials of love-loss and love-gained.Skin is a woman who allows herself to be a vessel, not just an artist who plays with make-up and hair as the crowd so often does(referring to many recording artist of today).I find myself in a trance when listening to her. You don’t just hear it, you feel it. That’s what separates her from many others who don’t have that connection with their music, let alone their listeners.  Lastly her lyrics are so sublime, so gut-wretchedly real its like audio therapy.

EDITORIAL| Losing Religion

There’s a R.E.M. song, ‘Losing My Religion’. Every lyric  speaks of searching for meaning, discovery, and coming to a turning point of sorts. The same can be said of this spread.

B O O M E R A N G

At 60+ Grace Jones imagery, concepts, and body of work will stand the test of time. EVERYTHING this woman does evokes something out you. You’d have to be death, blind, and non-human not to feel such. Not just ahead of her time, she infinitely defines the art of provocation.
